538 youths, 5 mins non-stop routine, 3 instructors, 2 1/2 hour, 1 record
The Big Groove
It was an eye-opener for me to witness and be part of the largest hip hop dance workshop conducted in singapore. Organised by O school, part of the Shine festival under MCYS, I must say that it was tough but wonderful coordinating by the organisers.
Perks of the entire workshop were free admission, free t-shirts for first 100 online registration, free bottles of water given during the dance to hydrate us, plenty of ushers to ensure our bags are kept orderly and can be located quickly at the end of the workshop, lots of groovy and inspiring performances, pump-it-up music blast the way it should, and of course learning the steps itself from the 3 superb instructors.
First up was Ryan from O school, teaching a routine that was mostly new school hip hop. It was mostly locking and quick drops. This is my favourite routine of the three.
Then we had Ann from NRA, teaching new school hip hop also. Her routine contained mostly points, crumping (?) and hand movement. It was quite easy to catch and fun to dance to.
Last session was conducted by Lionel from LADC, teaching old school hip hop. His routine contained skittles, purely skittles. It was the easiest to remember but the hardest to execute. Basically skittles was (to me) not a very easy step to grasp. 2 halfs, 1 full, 1 double, 1 around the world, 1 half, 1 full (to the floor), hand and BAM! That's the whole routine.
Other than the dance sessions, there were also performances put up by the various schools and the last Funkamania winners. They were certainly impressive and indeed, we still need to work triply hard (with God) to get there! =)
Anyway I hope to really teach you guys what I learnt over the next few dance trainings but there's a really big problem, which is no music. I have completely no idea what songs they used other than the one by Ryan which went something like "one for the money, two for the show". I suppose the songs are all popular songs, just that I don't have that large a song library. :S
We'll settle that again later, but am glad to hear so many conversions taking place over the past 2 weeks. Hope that Closests has been enjoyable to you and your friends!
