Study tips

It's 2 weeks away from your prelims and the rate of increase in your list of things to do far exceeds the rate you are completing them. Instead of getting all stressed up, here are some suggestions from a mugger (ie me).

First, know your learning style.

You could take an online test (http://www.metamath.com/lsweb/dvclearn.htm) in less than 5 minutes, and accurately access the way you learn best. This is helpful because you probably won't have time to go through all your material two or three times over (unless you have been mugging since start of the year - which is really impossible, so fret not), and you want to retain as much information as possible the first time round.

So after you know your learning style, the next obvious thing to do is to study accordingly.
Simply, if you are a visual learner, draw mindmaps (no matter how outdated this might sound, it has been proven to work). If you are more of an auditory learner (like me), read aloud the notes you are studying (just don't read aloud your answers during exams).

Next, plan your study timetable and weekly timetable, and keep to it as much as possible.
You want to be as detailed as possible, listing subjects, topics, chapters, but do have some buffer space. You never know when you might need to bring your sick kitty to the vet. The study timetable should allow you to complete your homework, revision papers, etc as well as cover a few chapters for the day.

*Important point to note: don't overestimate your attention span and try to study 6 hours in a row. Plan breaks in-between and keep to those times as well! Be flexible as well, if you find yourself gaining study momentum at the time you're supposed to take a break, you could re-schedule that break to half an hour later.

Breaks and rest are essential to prevent burn-out and replenishing your physical body. Your body can't be in a fight-or-flight position all the time, and mum is always right when they say you should be turning in early for the night. Unless you are nocturnal animals (like me), burning the midnight oil is often unproductive and not worth the effort.

Eating well is also part and parcel of study tips. Brain food like Chicken Essence may supplement your diet but should never be taken in substitute to your regular meals. I want all you dancers to eat well, not snack well, so that you can all come back fit for christmas k!

Another studying "tool" I had was study groups. Most of you are probably in caregroups with people taking national exams also. Make use of them, muahahah! I mean, help each other! Share mindmaps, notes, study tips that your teachers said are meant only for your class. (This is probably the only time piracy is allowed.)

Study groups or partners are also helpful to test your own understanding of concepts, and to be more disciplined in your studying habits. Your caregroup, and school friends, who are weaker in math may approach you for help, and if you can solve the question, both parties benefit: your friend understands, and you know you understand!

*Words of advice: choose your meeting places wisely. Don't meet at people's homes unless you want to end up watching tv and taking an afternoon nap that you didn't plan for. Don't meet at places with background music that is as loud as the drilling from the neighbour upstairs. And most importantly, I find that it is polite to restrict questions-asking to an agreed time beforehand, so that your friend doesn't have to think of the solution to your math problem when she was trying to figure out how the central nervous system works.

Learn to de-stress. You may think that you are superman (good looks aside), but muggers know their limits, and pace themselves to peak at the main battle, that is your Os and As. Prelims serve as a hurdle to gauge your revision, but remember that success at this time should not encourage complacency, neither should poor grades encourage self-condemnation.

De-stress activities 101?
  • Exercise: they are good for your body and socialising. You might meet someone cute at the park. :x
  • Have a little booklet that contains the 1001 things you want to do after your exams. Surely you only want to have that mega celebration after your Os, but you can always indulge in rum and raisin ice cream from Scoopz after your last prelim paper.
  • Whack a willing partner, if not get a stress ball.
  • Talk to your friends about the prom dress you've been eyeing on, and maybe share some of your 1001 celebration plans.
  • Write encouragement cards to others. He who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.
  • Reward yourself with an additional 1/2 hour TV programme or MSN chatting session or your favourite food if you have managed to keep to your timetable for the last week.
  • Draw. I know some of us are not naturally artistic people, but drawing is a good way to vent your inner frustrations.
  • Write. Poems, blessings, anything at all.
  • Dance. If you have not thought of this, shame on you! ahhaha. :P Turn on that music and dim the lights, you can have disco anytime at home.
  • Cry. This may sound absolutely nonsense, but I believe that crying is perfectly normal for a stressed individual. Think like this, keeping in those tears just means that the water potential in the dam is increasing, and can result in a flood one day. I got a more gross imagery, but I think I will keep it to myself for the time-being.
  • Take a good, long 1/2 hour bath. (If you take 1/2 hour baths everyday, I suggest you start cutting down on them - save time and water.) A bath refreshes your body and you can actually think through concepts that you don't quite understand in that bath.
  • The list goes on infinitely, but the most important activity is...

Pray. Spend time in God's presence. Know that you are first a Christian, then a student. At the end of the day, God is not even concerned about your studies, He is concerned about how you've gone through this period of time with Him. If you're like me, questioning why you have to go through the Os AND the As, the reason is for us to grow closer to Him. I keep a journal and blog to record my blessings, and from there, I can see how real God is in my life, esp during my O and A level years.

I'm also studying for my Uni, so if any of you want to study together or need help with certain subjects, we can work out something.

Hope this helped, if not you've probably wasted 5 mins of your life and studying time reading this. Take care and don't slack. Use the tagboard for prayer requests if you want.

to all my co-labourers in Christ:

thank you for serving with your talents, your toil, your studies, your pastoring of the people, your faithfulness with cg, your influence in your communities and your God-pleasing attitude.

it was another dizzy day for me, but through it all i understood how vision propels one to sacrifice and give more than they think they can. it's God's vision since the beginning in Genesis for the world He loves, that compels me to keep on dancing for Him alone.

in the past, during my syf n ballet trainings, i will always find ways to 'siam' cos i dun see the value of all the hard work. thank God it's different now. with co-labourers and a spiritual and highly talented instructor, it's not too difficult to give my best for the Kingdom.

okay, hope that all of u have been practising hard on ur spins, cos tml we're supposed to be able to do 16 on each side. i totally cannot make it and decided to surf the net to see if there was any remedy to my dizziness. below is an article i found, hope it's helpful.

Spotting

A dancer may never do the 32 fouettes in Swan Lake but she still must know how to spin without getting dizzy or falling over. For this she learns a technique called spotting.

The Science of Spinning

Dizziness can be a described as the result of a confusion between what the eyes see and the brain is told. If we spin round and round then stop suddenly it can feel as if the room is still moving even though we can see quite clearly that everything is standing still and that our feet are planted firmly on the floor. In classical dancing spinning can form the centre piece of many famous ballets and being able to avoid or control dizziness is essential.

Dizziness alters our ability to balance. Balance is governed primarily by information received through our eyes and by three fluid filled chambers, called semi-circular canals, in the inner ear. When we turn our head from side to side this fluid stays relatively static compared with the movement of the head. Fine hairs projecting into the fluid and connected to special nerve cells which pick up the movement of the fluid and send a message to the brain. The difference between the movement of the fluid and the movement of the head is processed by the brain to calculate the speed and direction of the movement.

However when the body spins round continually the fluid in the inner ear picks up momentum and spins as well. Once this momentum is built up, it is slow to stop. The fluid in the balance organs keeps spinning even after the head is static. So the brain believes the body is still spinning even though the eyes are telling it the opposite. This contradiction between inner ear balance organs and vision (you can see you have stopped but it feels as if you haven't) causes dizziness. The brain gets two different messages and is trying to work out which one is telling the truth. In most people dizziness calms down quite soon but for people with diseases in the inner ear, such as Meniere's Disease, a simple turn of the head can cause extreme dizziness that leads to nausea and vomiting and the only respite is when they lie down.

Spotting - Marianela Nuñez

A dancer stops him or herself from getting dizzy by "spotting": focussing on one point for as long as possible before turning the head round in the spin to catch up with the body and focus on the same spot. The head is therefore being kept as still as possible for as long a time as possible while the body is continually moving. This enables the fluid in the inner ear to remain relatively still and not build any momentum thus avoid the confusing signals when the body stops.

There are other qualities a dancer needs to enable them to turn. Marianela Nuñez and Jonathan Cope are principal dancers with The Royal Ballet. In order to do the multiple pirouettes needed in Don Quixote the dancer must have strength as well as balance, but in duets the partner can also help as Jonathan Cope explains: "If the girl can turn on her own, it's very easy to partner her. But if she can't turn on her own then the secret is to get her straight and on her leg, and then the boy can turn her. But Marianela can turn very well on her own so pretty much I'm not actually doing anything. I'm starting the turn and she's just spinning in my hands.

With a girl that can't turn very well I'd have to push the turn round. And obviously the trouble with doing that is that you can actually sometimes send a pirouette off, so it's pushing to keep it straight, exactly like spinning a top really. But obviously a great turn is when it's completely on balance and it just keeps going, and going, and going, and going. But everybody's different and I think with some girls it's more like I have to keep rotating her ".

another site you might want to look at is http://www.ballroomdancers.com/Learning_Center/Lesson/2/Default.asp?Page=5

and last but not least, i think enough rest plays an important part in keeping ur mind alert too. :)

E-buzz is right, dance is the next big thing in Singapore, and all over the world.

Just to quote a few instances,
  • Movies related to dance, namely "The Last Dance", "Honey" and "Take the Lead".
  • Shows like "So you think you can dance" and the up-coming "Dance Floor"
  • Games like "Audition SEA", coming from the creators of Maplestory and Pangya
  • Various small to large-scaled competitions, think "Girl's Nation Dance Battle" by StudioWu, "Streetstyle Slam" (previous post) and "Overdrive" by Wade Robson
  • Mega-events, "The Big Groove" organised by O school and "Da:ns", the equivalent of singapore arts festival, by Esplanade later in the year
  • Friends and people on the public transport you overheard talking about their (sudden) interest in Salsa, Hip Hop and even Exotic dances

Well, all these and more (I'm sure) are obvious enough clues to why dance is the next big thing.

Now, why am I blogging about this? Is it that I have no better thing to do (like my psych or history readings)? Or it could be that I'm trying to keep this place alive (*hint*)! OK, getting to the point, I think now is the time we should participate and learn.

I don't expect you to take part in the competitions as yet, but do save up to watch at least 1 performance in Da:ns, or at least turn on the tv once "Dance Floor" starts. Let's also spend some time training up our stamina (I'm guilty of not doing this) and techniques (that is go for Tues trainings) for Camp, Christmas 2006 and whatever is to come in 2007! really hoping we can go take part in some small competition next year.

And we had a great teaching during the WAM vision night that just passed, if you're interested, do let me know via email, sms, msn, vadeva-vay-vou-van-vhink-vf, and I promise to zap my copy for you.

hey! look at the right column and notice a new link to www.wessani.com this is the website done by two brothers who dance in hope czech. gwen passed me the url and if you heard shirls during the breakthrough meeting, these two brothers can really breakdance. go look at some of their pics and be impressed. but be forewarned, everything's in czech, so just surf lar. haha.

tts how dance is so cool, it breaks the language barrier and people who dun understand a thing the song is saying or the preacher is preaching, can appreciate the movement we bring to the audience.

this pic came all the way from europe. it's found in a photo frame. think it's not very clear here, but i just tot it will be quite cool if we can take a pic while someone is jumping up in the air. ok random.

and im looking forward to tues night, WAM vision night! in case i missed out anyone intending to come for it, let's meet 6.30pm @ Fat Mama's for dinner! =)
