Retreat
Want to thank all you peeps for coming down today. Like what Yenli said, it was almost an East gathering, with the overwhelming number of East dancers. So I want to especially thank those who came down from the North and the Central area (Yenli, Eugene, Meirong, Christine and DK who tried to rush down after his army.) Also many of you came down from various places and had to rush off earlier to meet other people; thanks for making the effort to join us. I know our table had fun killing each other at RISK, and also tricking Shane into picking the red block for Jenga.
As what was shared, I'm really looking forward to another year of growth in quantity and quality with this team. It is not just enough to have more male (and female) dancers, we need to improve our skills, creativity, and stature in God. Many many things to share still, but for now, just want to say that this year will be filled with breakthroughs so don't let God pass you by!
In case of emergency, (replace with your favourite genre of dance)

Breakthrough camp!
Thanks Shane! Indeed many many people said that the Opening Ceremony impressed them a great deal and I have people coming up to me on the last day of camp saying they wish to join us. :D
As promised, here is the video of the rehearsal we had for the opening ceremony. I saw the actual opening ceremony dance and it is much neater than this, so no worries - everyone did a fantabulous job! Unfortunately that video got deleted by accident, so this is the only archive available.
Uploading and sorting all my pre-camp and camp pictures now, so here are they!
Breakthrough! Hi-Medium-Lo

Shane (and Api) fooling around at rehearsal

We believe!

Teaching the mass dance to CLs n core team
We'll meet this Tues for a mini post-opening ceremony celebration! :D Am getting yiyou and mabel (from deco) to join us as well. More information coming soon...

B1000
Understand that most of us will be packed with activities this week/hols: sowing, cg, dmms, dance practices, exams (study hard poly peeps!) ... but do take care of your physical and spiritual health. Your body is a temple where the Spirit of God resides, so if you think you're the duracell bunny that go on forever, please go (warning: violent!) bang your head against the wall and wake up. Now is not the time to fall sick or get injured! Now is the time to harvest!
See you peeps tomorrow!

Sat practice
Need you peeps to recap your steps, and haunt me online for the music, if you have not already done so. We'll meet to warm-up and prepare at 10.30 America Rm. Let me know if you need a morning call.
Do remind your CLs also to dress appropriately for this occasion. Same for us. If possible, bring along your green and/or white top (we discussed this on tues) and 3/4s.
Help to spread the word to other dancers in your unit/sub-d also.

Indeed many times in life we go for the bare minimum instead of the very best. We forget that God desires the spirit of excellence, never lukewarm Christians. Clearly He says that we cannot be both hot and cold, from the same mouth how can praises for God as well as slander sprout?
Don't get me wrong that you guys are becoming this sort of people, in fact I applaud all of you for your commitment to God and His ministry!
Firstly to those who are studying hard right now for exams, do your best! Not because your parents, teachers and yourselves have certain expectations towards this exams, but remember why Jesus hung on the cross. His love compels us to love and serve.
To those who never fail to show up every training, rain or shine, I sincerely thank you for your service to God. Especially to Christine, Jacq and Yenli, you 3 strong armour bearers are powerful women of God! Not to forget Shane...brother, rise up! :D Lead the girls!
As we prepare for Camp n Christmas, I urge all to pray even more. Pray for the team: those taking the exams and dancing alike, and pray that we'll remember through our service Jesus' death and resurrection. Because our acts of studying and dancing are symbols of our worship to God, let's do them excellently! And let's also pray for ourselves, camp is merely a month away, let's not miss out on this chance to be transformed by His Word.
Lastly, I pray that this team will continue to spur each other on to serve God even more passionately and faithfully. Thank you for being part of my life. :D

Two winners will be picked where they stand to win a return air ticket to either Kota Kinabalu or Langkawi, kindly sponsored by SilkAir. In addition, there are also five consolation prizes to be won. The draw will be conducted at library@orchard on 24 February 2007, 3pm.
Take part in our ASK! Contest and stand a chance to win a book. Simply pick up the ASK! Contest form and ask any (one) burning question that you have in mind. Attach your loan receipts of 4 items to the quiz form. Drop it in the ASK! Contest box. The ASK! Contest is available at Jurong, Woodlands and Tampines Regional Libraries only.

thanks to the da:ns festival, there are plenty of free performances around everyday from 12-22 oct. just went to the opening night latin dance party yesterday with yenli. sure saw how those young gentlemen and ladies make salsa so easy and sexy. apart from that, there was also a Javanese dance performance that was very interesting. it's more of a traditional dance so there's elaborate costumes and defined hand and foot work, but you can see the guy's muscles protuding cos he's really dancing his best for the whole 20 mins.
anyway, do read on about the free events and contact me if u're interested for any. i'll try to go along with you.
1. The Locusts' Wrath
by The Arts Fission Company
15 oct (sun) 6-7pm, Esplanade Rehearsal Studio
first-come-first-served, meeting point at Theatre Studio entrance at 5.30pm
synopsis of the event:
Be a part of the creative process as artists bring their ideas to fruition. This showcase gives you a first peek into the piece-in-progress of a new dance piece, The Locusts' Wrath. (this basically means that they want to hear your feedback after the showcase cos the actual performance is in about 2 years time! look at the hard work pple put in...)
Developed by Angela Liong, The Locusts' Wrath looks at the extreme climatic changes that parallel the condition of the human psyche. The development of the work draws from literay/ culteral sources as well as relevant scientific research. (:S) One of the intentions of this creative process is to cultivate a new genre of Asian dance theatre that engages audiences with dynamic interaction between contemporary dance and music and a visual narrative through multi-media projections.
2. Pichet Klunchun and Myself
by and with Pichet Klunchun and Jerome Bel
20 & 21 October 2006 (Friday & Saturday) 8pm,72-13
Free Admission (Please call (65) 67377213 and speak to Tay Tong or Mervyn, or email tworks@singnet.com.sg to reserve a seat)
synopsis:
Renowned French contemporary dancer / choreographer, Jerome Bel, teams up with Pichet Klunchun, the exhilarating classical performer of Thai ‘Khon’ mask dance in this remarkable performance. The hottest contemporary dance duet in Europe this year, Bel and Klunchun will perform their conversation which explodes all notions of contemporary dance.
On stage, the two dancers reconstruct a theatrical report of their experience of working together. Throughout the piece they alternate between asking questions of one another and offering each other and the audience short dance demonstrations. . The success of this most original dance documentary performance is that it brings together two artists who, although worlds apart in so many ways, share humour, sense and a great open-mindedness.

Random-ness
Dance
An hour of moderate, sustained dance burns 250-300 calories - twice as much as tennis, swimming, walking, or bicycling. An hour of vigorous dancing - such as the Jitterbug or Lindy Hop - can burn up to 400 calories.
Dance can also reduce back pain, slow age-related muscle loss, and since it is a weight bearing exercise, help to build and maintain strong bones. So it's time to make that left foot right and enjoy exercising.
This is actually a good site to check if there's any low cost dance courses available to you at your nearby Community Centre (CC).

Study tips
First, know your learning style.
You could take an online test (http://www.metamath.com/lsweb/dvclearn.htm) in less than 5 minutes, and accurately access the way you learn best. This is helpful because you probably won't have time to go through all your material two or three times over (unless you have been mugging since start of the year - which is really impossible, so fret not), and you want to retain as much information as possible the first time round.
So after you know your learning style, the next obvious thing to do is to study accordingly.
Simply, if you are a visual learner, draw mindmaps (no matter how outdated this might sound, it has been proven to work). If you are more of an auditory learner (like me), read aloud the notes you are studying (just don't read aloud your answers during exams).
Next, plan your study timetable and weekly timetable, and keep to it as much as possible.
You want to be as detailed as possible, listing subjects, topics, chapters, but do have some buffer space. You never know when you might need to bring your sick kitty to the vet. The study timetable should allow you to complete your homework, revision papers, etc as well as cover a few chapters for the day.
*Important point to note: don't overestimate your attention span and try to study 6 hours in a row. Plan breaks in-between and keep to those times as well! Be flexible as well, if you find yourself gaining study momentum at the time you're supposed to take a break, you could re-schedule that break to half an hour later.
Breaks and rest are essential to prevent burn-out and replenishing your physical body. Your body can't be in a fight-or-flight position all the time, and mum is always right when they say you should be turning in early for the night. Unless you are nocturnal animals (like me), burning the midnight oil is often unproductive and not worth the effort.
Eating well is also part and parcel of study tips. Brain food like Chicken Essence may supplement your diet but should never be taken in substitute to your regular meals. I want all you dancers to eat well, not snack well, so that you can all come back fit for christmas k!
Another studying "tool" I had was study groups. Most of you are probably in caregroups with people taking national exams also. Make use of them, muahahah! I mean, help each other! Share mindmaps, notes, study tips that your teachers said are meant only for your class. (This is probably the only time piracy is allowed.)
Study groups or partners are also helpful to test your own understanding of concepts, and to be more disciplined in your studying habits. Your caregroup, and school friends, who are weaker in math may approach you for help, and if you can solve the question, both parties benefit: your friend understands, and you know you understand!
*Words of advice: choose your meeting places wisely. Don't meet at people's homes unless you want to end up watching tv and taking an afternoon nap that you didn't plan for. Don't meet at places with
Learn to de-stress. You may think that you are superman (good looks aside), but muggers know their limits, and pace themselves to peak at the main battle, that is your Os and As. Prelims serve as a hurdle to gauge your revision, but remember that success at this time should not encourage complacency, neither should poor grades encourage self-condemnation.
De-stress activities 101?
- Exercise: they are good for your body and socialising. You might meet someone cute at the park. :x
- Have a little booklet that contains the 1001 things you want to do after your exams. Surely you only want to have that mega celebration after your Os, but you can always indulge in rum and raisin ice cream from Scoopz after your last prelim paper.
- Whack a willing partner, if not get a stress ball.
- Talk to your friends about the prom dress you've been eyeing on, and maybe share some of your 1001 celebration plans.
- Write encouragement cards to others. He who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.
- Reward yourself with an additional 1/2 hour TV programme or MSN chatting session or your favourite food if you have managed to keep to your timetable for the last week.
- Draw. I know some of us are not naturally artistic people, but drawing is a good way to vent your inner frustrations.
- Write. Poems, blessings, anything at all.
- Dance. If you have not thought of this, shame on you! ahhaha. :P Turn on that music and dim the lights, you can have disco anytime at home.
- Cry. This may sound absolutely nonsense, but I believe that crying is perfectly normal for a stressed individual. Think like this, keeping in those tears just means that the water potential in the dam is increasing, and can result in a flood one day. I got a more gross imagery, but I think I will keep it to myself for the time-being.
- Take a good, long 1/2 hour bath. (If you take 1/2 hour baths everyday, I suggest you start cutting down on them - save time and water.) A bath refreshes your body and you can actually think through concepts that you don't quite understand in that bath.
- The list goes on infinitely, but the most important activity is...
Pray. Spend time in God's presence. Know that you are first a Christian, then a student. At the end of the day, God is not even concerned about your studies, He is concerned about how you've gone through this period of time with Him. If you're like me, questioning why you have to go through the Os AND the As, the reason is for us to grow closer to Him. I keep a journal and blog to record my blessings, and from there, I can see how real God is in my life, esp during my O and A level years.
I'm also studying for my Uni, so if any of you want to study together or need help with certain subjects, we can work out something.
Hope this helped, if not you've probably wasted 5 mins of your life and studying time reading this. Take care and don't slack. Use the tagboard for prayer requests if you want.

- Cry. This may sound absolutely nonsense, but I believe that crying is perfectly normal for a stressed individual. thank you for serving with your talents, your toil, your studies, your pastoring of the people, your faithfulness with cg, your influence in your communities and your God-pleasing attitude.
it was another dizzy day for me, but through it all i understood how vision propels one to sacrifice and give more than they think they can. it's God's vision since the beginning in Genesis for the world He loves, that compels me to keep on dancing for Him alone.
in the past, during my syf n ballet trainings, i will always find ways to 'siam' cos i dun see the value of all the hard work. thank God it's different now. with co-labourers and a spiritual and highly talented instructor, it's not too difficult to give my best for the Kingdom.

okay, hope that all of u have been practising hard on ur spins, cos tml we're supposed to be able to do 16 on each side. i totally cannot make it and decided to surf the net to see if there was any remedy to my dizziness. below is an article i found, hope it's helpful.
Spotting
A dancer may never do the 32 fouettes in Swan Lake but she still must know how to spin without getting dizzy or falling over. For this she learns a technique called spotting.
The Science of Spinning
Dizziness can be a described as the result of a confusion between what the eyes see and the brain is told. If we spin round and round then stop suddenly it can feel as if the room is still moving even though we can see quite clearly that everything is standing still and that our feet are planted firmly on the floor. In classical dancing spinning can form the centre piece of many famous ballets and being able to avoid or control dizziness is essential.
Dizziness alters our ability to balance. Balance is governed primarily by information received through our eyes and by three fluid filled chambers, called semi-circular canals, in the inner ear. When we turn our head from side to side this fluid stays relatively static compared with the movement of the head. Fine hairs projecting into the fluid and connected to special nerve cells which pick up the movement of the fluid and send a message to the brain. The difference between the movement of the fluid and the movement of the head is processed by the brain to calculate the speed and direction of the movement.
However when the body spins round continually the fluid in the inner ear picks up momentum and spins as well. Once this momentum is built up, it is slow to stop. The fluid in the balance organs keeps spinning even after the head is static. So the brain believes the body is still spinning even though the eyes are telling it the opposite. This contradiction between inner ear balance organs and vision (you can see you have stopped but it feels as if you haven't) causes dizziness. The brain gets two different messages and is trying to work out which one is telling the truth. In most people dizziness calms down quite soon but for people with diseases in the inner ear, such as Meniere's Disease, a simple turn of the head can cause extreme dizziness that leads to nausea and vomiting and the only respite is when they lie down.
Spotting - Marianela Nuñez
A dancer stops him or herself from getting dizzy by "spotting": focussing on one point for as long as possible before turning the head round in the spin to catch up with the body and focus on the same spot. The head is therefore being kept as still as possible for as long a time as possible while the body is continually moving. This enables the fluid in the inner ear to remain relatively still and not build any momentum thus avoid the confusing signals when the body stops.
There are other qualities a dancer needs to enable them to turn. Marianela Nuñez and Jonathan Cope are principal dancers with The Royal Ballet. In order to do the multiple pirouettes needed in Don Quixote the dancer must have strength as well as balance, but in duets the partner can also help as Jonathan Cope explains: "If the girl can turn on her own, it's very easy to partner her. But if she can't turn on her own then the secret is to get her straight and on her leg, and then the boy can turn her. But Marianela can turn very well on her own so pretty much I'm not actually doing anything. I'm starting the turn and she's just spinning in my hands.
With a girl that can't turn very well I'd have to push the turn round. And obviously the trouble with doing that is that you can actually sometimes send a pirouette off, so it's pushing to keep it straight, exactly like spinning a top really. But obviously a great turn is when it's completely on balance and it just keeps going, and going, and going, and going. But everybody's different and I think with some girls it's more like I have to keep rotating her ".

and last but not least, i think enough rest plays an important part in keeping ur mind alert too. :)

Just to quote a few instances,
- Movies related to dance, namely "The Last Dance", "Honey" and "Take the Lead".
- Shows like "So you think you can dance" and the up-coming "Dance Floor"
- Games like "Audition SEA", coming from the creators of Maplestory and Pangya
- Various small to large-scaled competitions, think "Girl's Nation Dance Battle" by StudioWu, "Streetstyle Slam" (previous post) and "Overdrive" by Wade Robson
- Mega-events, "The Big Groove" organised by O school and "Da:ns", the equivalent of singapore arts festival, by Esplanade later in the year
- Friends and people on the public transport you overheard talking about their (sudden) interest in Salsa, Hip Hop and even Exotic dances
Well, all these and more (I'm sure) are obvious enough clues to why dance is the next big thing.
Now, why am I blogging about this? Is it that I have no better thing to do (like my psych or history readings)? Or it could be that I'm trying to keep this place alive (*hint*)! OK, getting to the point, I think now is the time we should participate and learn.
I don't expect you to take part in the competitions as yet, but do save up to watch at least 1 performance in Da:ns, or at least turn on the tv once "Dance Floor" starts. Let's also spend some time training up our stamina (I'm guilty of not doing this) and techniques (that is go for Tues trainings) for Camp, Christmas 2006 and whatever is to come in 2007! really hoping we can go take part in some small competition next year.
And we had a great teaching during the WAM vision night that just passed, if you're interested, do let me know via email, sms, msn, vadeva-vay-vou-van-vhink-vf, and I promise to zap my copy for you.

The Big Groove
It was an eye-opener for me to witness and be part of the largest hip hop dance workshop conducted in singapore. Organised by O school, part of the Shine festival under MCYS, I must say that it was tough but wonderful coordinating by the organisers.
Perks of the entire workshop were free admission, free t-shirts for first 100 online registration, free bottles of water given during the dance to hydrate us, plenty of ushers to ensure our bags are kept orderly and can be located quickly at the end of the workshop, lots of groovy and inspiring performances, pump-it-up music blast the way it should, and of course learning the steps itself from the 3 superb instructors.
First up was Ryan from O school, teaching a routine that was mostly new school hip hop. It was mostly locking and quick drops. This is my favourite routine of the three.
Then we had Ann from NRA, teaching new school hip hop also. Her routine contained mostly points, crumping (?) and hand movement. It was quite easy to catch and fun to dance to.
Last session was conducted by Lionel from LADC, teaching old school hip hop. His routine contained skittles, purely skittles. It was the easiest to remember but the hardest to execute. Basically skittles was (to me) not a very easy step to grasp. 2 halfs, 1 full, 1 double, 1 around the world, 1 half, 1 full (to the floor), hand and BAM! That's the whole routine.
Other than the dance sessions, there were also performances put up by the various schools and the last Funkamania winners. They were certainly impressive and indeed, we still need to work triply hard (with God) to get there! =)
Anyway I hope to really teach you guys what I learnt over the next few dance trainings but there's a really big problem, which is no music. I have completely no idea what songs they used other than the one by Ryan which went something like "one for the money, two for the show". I suppose the songs are all popular songs, just that I don't have that large a song library. :S
We'll settle that again later, but am glad to hear so many conversions taking place over the past 2 weeks. Hope that Closests has been enjoyable to you and your friends!
